Model Overview & Print Notes

Summary Based on our previous origami folding hexagon design, we present to you: The Origami Folding Dice Tray! Designed to be compact, stowable, yet large enough to handle your dice, this model lets you keep your dice on the table with style. More variations on the way! Printing and Assembly Instructions Printing

In order for the hinges of this model to print well, the stl needs to be printed with the logo side up, and at a 0.1mm layer height. The thinner layers allow for the flexures to bend with less stress, improving the fatigue life of the model.

Supports should also be enabled! They're only needed for some very small sections (which can handle the overhang), but those sections can droop and make the subsequent gluing process trickier if you don't use supports.

Post Print Instructions

Once the model is printed, gently flex and then fold all of the hinges on each of the sides of the model. Once all hinges can fold to 180 degrees, fold up the three main sections and orient the diamonds/diamond holes to be near each other, as in the final model.

Then, take some superglue, and add a decent dot to the half-thickness arms that reach around the diamond-shaped hole to the diamond insert on the right of the two arms. Then, insert the diamond cutout into the hole, and press firmly. Repeat this for each of the three sets of arms, and then let the model rest while the glue sets.

After the glue has set, you can then gently bring the non-diamond points in, towards the middle, and the other points will follow until the model is folded flat. Gently unfold and refold the model once or twice, making sure the glue is holding, and you should be done!
