Model Overview & Print Notes
Summary Testosterone (C19H28O2, CAS 58-22-0) — a free educational 3D molecular model for teachers and students, by MolGod.org. Symbols are engraved into every atom, so students read atoms by symbol, not by colour. Colour keys break down in 3D printing, because an STL holds geometry alone and most classroom printers use one filament at a time. Our answer is to cut each element symbol into its sphere, so the printed object labels itself in any colour of filament. We design these models so that students can name every atom straight away and concentrate on connectivity, bond types and shape. The labelling that would otherwise be done with stickers or paint after printing is already part of the file. Teachers and researchers can find the project rationale and validation plan at https://molgod.org/engraved-molecular-models/ . Let the group sketch what they see in Testosterone, namely four rings (one 5-membered and three 6-membered), with three pairs of rings fused along a shared edge; afterwards they compare the sketch with the 52 bonds on the model (50 single and 2 double). Students work from the model back to the formula C19H28O2: the symbol count is 19 C + 28 H + 2 O, or 49 atoms all told. This molecule gives students these functional groups to identify: ketone group (C=O), hydroxyl group (-OH) and carbon-carbon double bond (C=C). Stereocentres to find in Testosterone: six in all, with CIP labels S, S, R, S, S, R. Students can check each one against the priority rules. Plan it into a unit on chirality, enantiomers and CIP (R/S) rules, on fused ring systems, on the carbonyl group (C=O), as well as on alcohols and hydrogen bonding. MolGod.org shares these models for free to make chemistry tangible in the classroom. Teachers: hand out printed copies and ask students to rebuild the structural formula from the model. This printable molecule is free to use in lessons, clubs and workshops. When you publish a photo, a worksheet or a remix, CC BY-SA 4.0 requires you to credit "MolGod.org" as the author of the model, link to the original and to the licence, indicate any changes and share remixes under the same licence (the ready attribution line is below). Nothing else is needed: no account, no cost, no compulsory feedback. Teachers and students, we read every comment. Tell us in a review how the model worked for you and what we could do better for education; for longer feedback write to https://molgod.org/contact/ .
