Model Overview & Print Notes
Summary Dopamine (C8H11NO2, CAS 51-61-6) — a free educational 3D molecular model for teachers and students, by MolGod.org. Whatever the filament colour, each atom reads clearly thanks to its engraved symbol. An STL file stores shape only, never colour, so a printed ball-and-stick model usually gives no clue which sphere is which element. The MolGod approach puts the information where students look for it, on the atom: every sphere is engraved with its symbol. Our goal is to let students understand on their own how the atoms are arranged, how they are bonded and what the 3D geometry looks like, straight from the model in their hands. The labelling that would otherwise be done with stickers or paint after printing is already part of the file. The research behind the idea, and how we plan to test it, is described at https://molgod.org/engraved-molecular-models/ . Look at the skeleton first: Dopamine contains one aromatic 6-membered ring, and students can trace 22 bonds (16 single and 6 aromatic, drawn in Kekulé form). Give each pair of students the model and a blank sheet: recording every engraved symbol should lead them to 8 C + 11 H + 1 N + 2 O, which is 22 atoms. Before any theory, let students hunt on the model for the two phenolic hydroxyl groups (Ar-OH) and the primary amino group (-NH2). Topics it supports in class: aromaticity and delocalised electrons, phenols and hydrogen bonding, as well as amines and basicity. For compare-and-contrast work, Norepinephrine (CAS 51-41-2) and 3,4-Dihydroxybenzaldehyde (CAS 139-85-5) are structurally close to it in this collection. MolGod.org shares these models for free to make chemistry tangible in the classroom. Teachers: let students set the model beside a skeletal formula and list what the drawing omits. Download it, print it and use it in your teaching. Sharing it somewhere? The licence (CC BY-SA 4.0) needs four things: "MolGod.org" credited as the creator, links to the original and to the licence, a mention of any changes, and adaptations released under the same licence. The attribution text below covers the first two. Nothing else is needed: no account, no cost, no compulsory feedback. Printed it? Used it in class? Please share a quick review in the comments and suggest how we can make our molecules even more useful for learning. You can also contact us at https://molgod.org/contact/ . Questions about the chemistry behind this molecule are welcome too: start a discussion in the comments and we will happily join in. Every request counts: tell us which molecule you need and we will make its 3D model specially for your students.
