Model Overview & Print Notes
Summary Aspirin (C9H8O4, CAS 50-78-2) — a free educational 3D molecular model for teachers and students, by MolGod.org. Whatever the filament colour, each atom reads clearly thanks to its engraved symbol. A one-colour print of a molecule hides the most basic information, which element each atom is, because STL keeps no colour data. Each atom of a MolGod model is engraved with its element symbol, turning a plain print into a self-explaining teaching object. The purpose is educational: teachers get printable files built to shorten the step of 'which atom is this?' and leave more time for chemistry. No CAD skills are needed on the teacher's side; the structure, geometry and labels come ready in one file. Curious about the science behind the engraving? The project page is at https://molgod.org/engraved-molecular-models/ . Turn the model in your hand to see the shape of Aspirin: one aromatic 6-membered ring, and 21 bonds in total (13 single, 2 double and 6 aromatic, drawn in Kekulé form). How many atoms can the class find? The engraved spheres give 9 C + 8 H + 4 O, so the answer should be 21. Before any theory, let students hunt on the model for the carboxylic acid group (-COOH) and the ester group (-COO-). Use it when you teach aromaticity and delocalised electrons, as well as the carbonyl group (C=O). Want a comparison? The most similar structures in the MolGod.org collection are 2-Phenoxybenzoic acid (CAS 2243-42-7) and Phthalic Acid (CAS 88-99-3). MolGod.org builds and releases these models at no cost for chemistry teaching. Teachers: pass the model round at the start of the lesson, before showing any diagram. The model is yours to download, print and teach with. Publishing pictures, materials or remixes of it? Under CC BY-SA 4.0, name "MolGod.org" as the author, link back to the original and to the licence, mark your changes and keep remixes under the same terms. A ready-made attribution is included below. There is no registration, no payment and no obligation to rate it. We'd love to hear from you! Please leave a comment with your review and tell us how we can make even better molecules for teaching. You can also reach us at https://molgod.org/contact/ . The comment section is open for discussion: how did you introduce this molecule, and what did your students notice first? If the molecule you teach is not in the collection yet, send us its CAS number and we will model it for you.
