Model Overview & Print Notes
Jules Émile Planchon — Bust Inspired by a historical photographic portrait, this bust depicts Jules Émile Planchon in a classical composition, with a restrained expression and an attentive gaze. His hairstyle, sideburns and distinctive nineteenth-century clothing are recreated in a sculptural interpretation that highlights his facial features. A French botanist, physician and pharmacist, Jules Émile Planchon (1823–1888) was a major figure in the fight against phylloxera. In 1868, alongside Gaston Bazille and Félix Sahut, he helped identify the insect on the roots of declining grapevines. His research subsequently contributed to a decisive solution: grafting European grape varieties onto resistant American rootstocks. His work thus helped safeguard and restore vineyards. This bust pays tribute to a scientist whose legacy connects botany, the history of wine and the expertise of winegrowers.
