Model Overview & Print Notes
This is my design of an intentional technical-looking hook to hang clothes or bags to a clothes rail. I designed it for a minimal material use and with a good compromise of stability. Update 2022-09-27: Added D18 for Ikea furniture. Added labels to model images. Added visual PDF catalog. How to Print the Hook Print the hook on its side. Larger hooks printed with PETG or ASA tend to wrap. Add brim or mouse ears in these cases to prevent the ends from lifting. I created an example project LR2258-W12-D15 Print.3mf for Prusa Slicer with all required settings. If you need to create your setup from scratch, check out the following table: Nozzle Size: 0.4mm , 0.6mm or 0.8mm Layer Height: 0.2mm for 0.4mm nozzle 0.3mm for 0.6mm nozzle 0.4mm for 0.8mm nozzle Filament Materials: PLA, PETG or ASA Prusa Slicer Profile: “0.2mm Quality” Dimensions The part number and file name have the following format: LR2258-W<hook width>-D<rail diameter>.3mf Hook Width and Height Dimension W defines the width and also height of the hook. The number after the letter in the filename is the dimension in mm. The height depends on the width and is calculated by multiplying the width by two and adding one millimetre. Clothes Rail Diameter Dimension D defines the nominal diameter of the clothes rail. The number after the letter in the filename is the width in mm. The hook works with round rails, but also with rounded rectangle rails. For the latter, the maximum height is twice the diameter. The hook will not slide on the rail easily if the height is larger. Visual PDF Catalog There is a PDF LR2258 Catalog.pdf that contains images of all model files, dimensions and filenames. About the Design With this design, I tried to create a technical-looking hook that uses minimum material but still provides good stability. The hook is perfectly symmetrical, so it does not matter which end hangs on the rail. To create perfect-looking prints, I designed the geometries for 0.4mm nozzles at a 0.2mm layer height. This combination produces the best results, as all walls print with four evenly spaced lines. The dimensions I used also work for 0.6mm or 0.8mm nozzles with the specified layer heights. I didn't test prints with these sizes, but they should also produce great results. Yet, 0.5mm or other sized nozzles will not make excellent results. The profile is an almost perfect “X” with 45º angles. I added two rounded corners in the middle to add more material to these weak points. Also, there are ribs at critical points, forming a complete rectangle. These prevent distortions when weight is put on the hook. PLA is not Ideal for Heavy Weights PLA is not an ideal material. If stressed with large weights the material will slowly but permanently deform over time. So, if you print these hooks with PLA use them only for light weights. Maximum Weights The example print “LR2258-W12-D15”, printed with PETG, will easily hold a bag with 3kg or more. The maximum weight depends on the chosen hook width and material.
